Seonggoksa temple is located just North of Gongju City. It is in my opinion one of the most undiscovered, underrated temples in Korea. When I first visited, I was the only visitor and I thought it was a long abandoned temple site. After exploring a bit though, I found a dog that followed me around for the rest of my visit. I also found the caretaker at one of the buddhas.
Strewn across the mountain are giant statues of Buddha. It took me three visits to find all of them.
The main hall of the temple looks like any other. It's the Buddha statues that make this temple shine.
The first set of buddhas I came across was a thousand life sized buddhas paying homage to a central much larger Buddha.
The second Buddha I found were these three statues; one sitting, one standing, and one lying on its side.
The next set I found were these two buddhas and rows of memorial urns.
The last Buddha I found was this mountain sized Buddha.
I highly recommend visiting this temple of you're ever in Korea.
