Fun things to see around Gongju: Gongsanseong Fortress, Geumgang Singwan Park, Songsalli Ancient Tombs, Gongju Hanok Village, Woongjin Baekje Culture Museum, Magoksa Temple, Seonggoksa Temple
Gongju is one of three major historic cities in the area tied to the Baekje kingdom that predates the Joseon Dynasty (pre 1400 AD). The other two cities being Buyeo and Iksan. As such, although Gongju is a smaller city, it still has a lot of very fascinating historical sites.
The most popular attraction in Gongju is the fortress. Although the fortress is free, pets are not allowed in the fortress. Because the main point of the fortress is to hike the walls, wheelchairs and strollers are not recommended either. That said, the fortress offers the best views of Gongju. This was the first site I visited in Gongju while on a work field trip (to improve our cultural awareness).
The park most of the year isn't much to see, but in the fall, it comes to life with its cosmos flower and pink Muhly grass fields.
Each year around the beginning of October, Gongju throws their Baekje culture festival along with the city of Buyeo. The flowers, lights, and floating boat formations on the river are a must see.
As far as tombs go, Songsalli tombs site is top tier. With a fancy museum and a fun walk along royal tombs of past royalty, it's definitely worth a visit.
Just down the road from the tombs easily within walking distance is the Hanok village. This village definitely feels more fabricated than other Hanok villages I've been to, but it still has some fun views and offers rooms for rent within the village.
Magoksa temple is one of the major temples in the area that governs the sixth district of the Jogye order of Buddhism. One of the prettiest things about the temple is the nature hike to the temple.
Seonggoksa is a rather unique temple in comparison to other Korean temples. It is famous for its large Buddhist statues.
Because of its close proximity to my home station, I have been back to Gongju many times. Not only do I enjoy the historical sites and temples, but I also enjoy walking through the city itself. It has an enjoyable atmosphere and a large traditional market to explore. As my brother put it best when he visited, Gongju is a 'homey, sleepy city'.I like to add to that, 'with big dreams.'
